Alexander Hamilton Limited Edition Luxury Writing Instruments
Alexander Hamilton has been brought to life through a fruitful working cooperation of Montegrappa and Roger Stien. Stein is an awarding winning Harness and Thoroughbred Trainer and owner of an online pen store Penporium.com with writing instruments retailing from $35 up to $90,000. The Alexander Hamilton Limited Edition Fountain Pen and Rollerball series retails from $2,850 to $3,950.
The limited edition was designed by Italian pen manufacturer Giuseppe Aquila of Montegrappa and includes two hand painted versions of the Alexander Hamilton pens. 177 fountain pens and 100 rollerballs of each design have been produced. The recent attention to Hamilton as a major historical figure arising from the Broadway Musical provided the perfect opportunity to create an edition that focused on celebrating the life and accomplishments of Alexander Hamilton.
Stein felt very strongly about the need to include both a portrait of Hamilton done in a formal classical style, as well as something that focused on a celebration of Hamilton’s work with the US financial system. Thus, the two versions of the pen, one featuring a depiction of Hamilton based on John Trumbull’s famous portrait, and the other using a depiction based on that used on the US $10 currency.
THE ALEXANDER HAMILTON COLLECTION
Montegrappa and Roger Stein have honored Alexander Hamilton with two distinguished pen models in Ivory White or Black resin. The collection is imbued with highly-detailed surfaces and fittings to embody the various aspects of his personality, life, deeds and merits. Each model is produced in 177 fountain and 177 rollerball pens. The fountain pen is piston-fed, and the nib is made in 18k gold with the initials “AH” engraved on its surface.
Each Hamilton Edition features detailed sculptural elements in sterling silver for the cap top and barrel end as well as an intricate cap band. All are set off with rich vermeil accents. The Hamilton Edition is topped with a gleaming rose gold representation of the flame from atop the torch of Statue of Liberty.
The Alexander Hamilton Edition is limited to 177 fountain pens and 100 rollerballs for each design.
The number 177 refers to the Alexander Hamilton Founding Father Quote:
“Let the thirteen States, bound together in a strict and indissoluble Union, concur in erecting one great American system, superior to the control of all transatlantic force or influence, and able to dictate the terms of the connection between the old and the new world!”

Roger has long since been an aficionado of the level of craftsmanship involved in items like fine knives, watches, lighters, clocks, but he had never been a ‘collector’ until he fell engaged with the beauty of luxury writing instruments. Just like training horses, it is always the fine details that matter.
Roger loves to write and continues to be fascinated with the art of communicating, and the power of the written word. He has on average 8 to 10 luxury writing instruments, mostly crafted from precious metal in rotation every week, all are filled with black ink.
It was not long before Roger had accumulated several hundred pens in his collection, and that was when he became aware that he is not the only person that has a love of fine writing instruments. As a consumer, he knew the frustrations of trying to find limited editions that were sold out or were produced in very small quantities, and that is when his hobby began to develop into a business. Penporium.com was established in 2007.
About Roger Stein – A very successful Trainer for Harness and Thoroughbreds on the Southern California circuit.
Roger started owning Standardbred horses in 1976, received his training license in 1979, was the most successful and best ever Harness trainer in California. He eventually converted to training Thoroughbreds in the early 1997 on the Southern California circuit. He soon become a household name in the horse racing business, so much so, that his victories in winning so many races in Southern California reached across the pond and he was personally invited to meet with HM Queen Elizabeth at Royal Ascot. That meeting with Queen Elizabeth came in 1991 when Stein flew the thoroughbred horse Forty Niner Days across the pond to run in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Roger has trained and raced more than 2,000 horses in his career and is ranked as one of the top 20 horse trainers in Thoroughbred races throughout North America by Equibase.
Thanks to Roger’s financial success in the horse training and racing industry, he was able to invest heavily in Penporium.com. Today Penporium.com carries more than 15,000 fine writing instruments and has those pens in stock. This is unique because no other pen retailer can afford to hold such a large and varied stock holding of writing instruments. Every pen featured on Penporium’s website is available for immediate shipping. Penporium’s mission is to provide the best quality and variety of regular, limited and unique writing instruments, all available for purchase with immediate shipping.
Why should everyone own and use a good pen?
Roger’s father used to own a clothing business specializing in cowboy clothes, which at the time was very popular. He fitted many celebrities of the time, Tom Jones, Jonathan Winters, Paul Newman, Charles Bronson, Steven McQueen, Bert Reynolds, Diana Shore among others. Earlier in his childhood, Roger recognized that it is vital to pay attention to the small details in life; A well-fitting suit, proper haircut, great shoes. Owning a quality fine writing instrument is just as important. It sets you apart in today’s somewhat impersonal and technology driven world. Through the power of a handwritten note, you impart your personality by details as small as the way you write your characters to form a word. Letters today are as important as they were when written with a goose feather quill dipped in hand made iron gall ink.
Montegrappa was founded as a “Manifattura pennini d’oro e penne stilografiche” (“Manufacturer of gold nibs and fountain pens”) in Bassano del Grappa, Italy. Originally known as ELMO, benefitted from a pool of local talents, a workforce able to produce finely crafted objects, with style, with panache and with a drive to achieve excellence.
Montegrappa has produced the pen of choice for authors including John Dos Passos, Paulo Coelho and Ernest Hemingway. Its pens are used by popes, presidents and royalty. Among these notables are His Holiness John Paul II, His Majesty King Juan Carlos of Spain, His Majesty King Hussein of Jordan, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand, His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei and others.
The year 1981 proved to be a turning point for the company, when ownership and management of the company passed into the hands of the Aquila family. Their advent marks a radical change in the strategic positioning of the company, transforming the latter since 1995 into a corporation.
The fusion of Montegrappa with the Aquila sees a break in early 2000, when the family hands over the control of the company to Richemont – a Swiss group presiding over a series of luxury brands such as Cartier and Montblanc.
France’s President, Nicolas Sarkozy, joins the gathering of incredible personalities who have been proud owners of Montegrappa pens. To name a few, Montegrappa users include Vladimir Putin, Silvio Berlusconi, His Holiness John Paul II, His Majesty King Juan Carlos of Spain, His Majesty King Hussein of Jordan, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand, His Majesty Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, Silvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Jean Alesi, Michael Schumacher, Jean Todt, Stirling Moss, Zinedine Zidane, Edgar Davids, Naomi Campbell, Paulo Coelho and countless others.
