Recently on a trip to Texas, I spent the day exploring Rockin’ Star ranch. We started in the stables to prepare the horses for a horseback ride. The owner of the ranch, Darrell Griffith handed me an older Palomino named ‘Tater Tot’. He said she was a rescue that his son found, and was a gently soul. Tater-Tot walked by my side and soon realized that I was a gentle soul too.

I brushed her and whispered what a good horse she was before putting on a blanket and saddle. By the time I put my boots in the stirrups to sit in the saddle, we were instant buddies. I think Darrell could tell, because he asked if we could lead the beginning of the ride, while he rounded up the other riders.

We followed a trail to serene pond with a group of geese honking in the distance. “I bought 100 ducks for the lake,” said Darrell. “When I noticed a lot of their feathers on the ground, I realized we have a pair of bald eagles in that big tree by the pond. Now I have geese and the eagles leave them alone.”

Next we rode through a forest of trees to the new skeet shooting course being built, and stopped at a sunset event space where guests can tie up the horses and sit by a fire pit. Besides farm animals that guests can interact and pet, Darrell also has exotic animals such as elk and deer on the grounds. His new hunting excursion includes pheasant, quail and duck hunting adventures.
