How To Transition To A Greener Way of Living

Helpful Tips for Transitioning to Greener Ways of Living

Every day we make choices that directly impact the environment, the climate and the other species we share the planet with. There is an ever-growing concern that we are quickly approaching the point of no return for reducing our harmful impact on the world around us.

The truth is, there are plenty of ways that we can, as individuals, reduce our carbon footprints and instead positively impact the environment through sustainable and eco-friendly practices. So whether you choose to use greener beauty products like a low waste conditioner or want to invest in a more efficient home, you can be a contributing member to the change we desperately need.

Big Purchases, Big Benefits

For many people, rushing out to purchase the latest planet-friendly car or home appliance is not a feasible task. And while that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as the manufacturing and production of these items take a lot of resources, those who want to make the change need to find the most efficient and sustainable option available.

While the initial investment may be higher, the long-term benefits will not only save you money with reduced fuel or electricity consumption, but it will drastically reduce your carbon footprint and potentially eliminate your usage of non-renewable resources. Hybrid or electric cars, solar energy and Energy Star-labelled appliances are excellent places to start.

Be Water Wise

If your property does not have one, consider switching to a water meter. This will allow you to monitor your usage better and only pay for what you use. The money you save can be reinvested into water-saving devices like rainwater harvesting or greywater recycling systems.

Furthermore, stop buying bottled water and instead use a metal reusable water bottle and fit your kitchen tap with a filter. Additionally, take short showers, fix leaking taps and pipes, and invest in appliances that use low-flow and low-water technology.

Evaluate Your Transport

Changing your driving habits can dramatically affect your overall carbon footprint. Switch to walking, biking, carpooling, or public transport as much as possible. Combine errands while you are out to avoid unnecessary trips, and if your local grocery store offers it, use home delivery services.

In addition, be sure to keep your car in good working order with regular maintenance and correct tire inflation. This will increase the efficiency of your vehicle and reduce fuel consumption.

Go Plastic Free

The harsh reality is that plastic never disappears. Instead, it gets dumped in landfills, where it breaks down into microplastics that seep into the earth, only to reappear in water and food sources, presenting harmful conditions to both humans and animals. Furthermore, billions of pounds of waste can be found throughout the world’s oceans, covering a massive 40% of the water’s surface.

While more and more brands are attempting to switch to recycled plastic products or eliminate plastic from their products altogether, there are small changes you can make to move your household away from this destructive material. For example, you can ditch all single-use plastic products, instead using reusable shopping bags, water bottles and straws. And while shopping for food products, choose unwrapped produce and shop locally as much as possible.

Personal Care Necessities

A huge aspect of an eco-friendly lifestyle comes from the products you choose for personal hygiene. The beauty world has long been cast in a negative light due to unethical testing methods, excessive packaging waste and harmful ingredients.

The good news is that many brands have recognised the vital role they need to play in developing and maintaining sustainable brands and products that use environmentally friendly ingredients and packaging materials, utilise sustainable manufacturing methods and meet strict cruelty-free requirements.

Green Your Home

You can employ many different methods around your home to reduce your electricity and water consumption and make your home greener. Switch your light bulbs to LED versions, which last longer and are far more efficient than their regular counterparts.

Changing your shower head to an aerated one will significantly reduce water and energy consumption. Regularly maintain your appliances to extend their longevity and keep them working as efficiently as possible. And don’t be afraid to deck your home with vintage and secondhand furniture.

Prioritise Recycling

Recycling is a massive part of any plan when pursuing a more eco-friendly lifestyle. And while you may employ a few strategies to recycle standard household packaging and containers, it is always important to reevaluate how much you are doing and look for ways to do more.

The ultimate aim should be to recycle everything, from batteries to paper products and appliances. Many resources are available online, providing the necessary information regarding recycling methods. Additionally, you can start a compost in your back garden, allowing you to recycle food that has passed its best and leftover food scraps that would typically end up in the bin.

Use Your Voice & Vote

As a society, we are quickly reaching the point of no return regarding global warming and environmental damage. As a result, significant changes must be made to drastically reduce the harm caused by major companies and production methods worldwide.

Now more than ever, electing leaders who can and will make the necessary changes to reverse this dangerous trend and hold those responsible accountable is extremely important. Use your influence and power by getting involved in your community and exercising your right to vote. Campaign for better education and available resources to allow communities to make the necessary changes for a more sustainable future.
