Indulging in Colombia: An Escape Through History, Culture & Coffee
When it comes to destinations that combine opulence with authenticity, Colombia stands out as a hidden gem. Known for its vibrant culture, breathtaking landscapes, and fascinating history, the country offers a blend of indulgence and adventure to visitors. My recent journey through Cartagena and Medellín (with a visit to nearby Fredonia) delivered an unforgettable experience steeped in beauty and charm.
Cartagena: The Jewel of the Caribbean Coast
Cartagena, perched on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, is a city where history meets sophistication. I stayed at the Bastión Luxury Hotel which offered an exquisite blend of colonial charm and modern elegance. Housed in a beautifully restored 16th-century building, this five-star retreat captured the essence of the city’s rich history while delivering contemporary comforts.
The hotel is located within Cartagena’s UNESCO-listed Old Town which is encircled by 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) of ancient walls. The historic district is a maze of colorful buildings, lively plazas, and cobblestone streets. As I explored, the vibrant local culture came alive – complete with a serenade from local musicians who introduced me to Aguardiente, Colombia’s beloved “fiery water.”
I took a short boat ride to nearby Tierra Bomba Island where the Makani Luxury Beach Club welcomed me with a beautiful pool and an atmosphere of pure relaxation. Swimming in the warm Caribbean waters outside the property while enjoying food and drink in the club set the perfect tone for my trip.
Another highlight was going on a sunset boat cruise in Cartagena’s harbor. As the city skyline transformed from day to night, the scene became a painting of sparkling lights reflected in the water. Dinner aboard the boat, accompanied by panoramic views, made for a pretty magical experience.
Medellín: A Cultural Hub
From Cartagena’s coastal charm I traveled to Medellín in the northwestern part of the country. It’s Colombia’s second-largest city and a shining example of urban transformation. Known as the “City of Eternal Spring” for its temperate climate, Medellín is a popular destination within Colombia for good reason.
The Click Clack Hotel in Provenza served as my home base, offering a chic and modern aesthetic in a trendy neighborhoos. With its gourmet restaurants and stylish green spaces this 5-star hotel made for a great spot to start from and return to while exploring.
I took a stroll through Plaza Botero where whimsical bronze sculptures by Fernando Botero added a playful touch to the cityscape. The National Palace Mall, a former Palace of Justice, provided an unexpected juxtaposition of art galleries and clothing stores.
Medellín’s cable car system offered a unique view of the city, soaring above its neighborhoods and showcasing the innovative spirit that defines this metropolis. For a more introspective moment, I visited the Memory House Museum to learn more Medellín’s resilience and evolution over the years.
Fredonia: The Coffee Culture Experience
No journey through Colombia would be complete without immersing yourself in its legendary coffee culture, and a visit to the lush hills of Fredonia was the perfect escape from the city. At the family-run coffee farm of Café de la Cima I delved into the intricacies of coffee production, from picking the ripe berries to planting new crops.
Over the course of a few hours I learned all about the process of creating the perfect cup of coffee from start to finish – ending with a delicious taste of freshly brewed coffee that was definitely superior to what I’d normally get at home.
