Mr. Holmes Bakehouse Bread Kits

Owner and CEO Aaron Caddel (Forbes 30 Under 30 Honoree) of Mr. Holmes Bakehouse, a bakery in Highland Park and San Francisco, has decided that during this COVID-19 pandemic, it is imperative to pivot and turn his Mr. Holmes Bakehouse into an emergency commissary and grocery.

When Governor Gavin Newsom responsibly put the whole state on lockdown, EVERYTHING has changed and Caddel had hardly any customers visiting his two locations. He soon turned his bakeries into a retail curbside and delivery destination and soon saw the largest sales in his company’s history. He offers online bread starter baking kits, and in store deli meat, milk, eggs, and even toilet paper. He is also offering patrons a “pay what you can section,” for those most in need. The overwhelming demand of orders has caused Caddel to employ more people, and expedite his growth trajectory in the midst of a collapsing economy.

When one of his bread starter kits was delivered to my door step, it arrived in a cheerful box, with the Mr. Holmes peace sign. Inside were all the ingredients and instructions needed to make and bake my own warm bread at home. This starter kit is available online, and shipped nationwide. Caddel plans meet the core needs of a country in chaos – bake and “break bread” with those staying “SaferAtHome.”

Mr. Holmes Bakehouse is in R + D to offer 16 to 24 ready-to-bake chocolate chip cookies kits and a dessert/ scones baking kit too.

Bread Starter Kit – Arrives with a letter of why it is so important to support Mom & Pop CRAFT businesses right now. “As soon as your corner restaurant opens back up, please go get their food, CHOOSE to eat out, visit a hardware store or hair salon, instead of putting your valuable dollars to Amazon or other corporate giants. Our FEAR is when the pandemic settles, all that’s left is Starbucks, Google, McDonalds and somehow Sears.”

Another page shares how to get creative in making your bread baked in any heat-proof medium such as a frying pan, pie pan, pound cake loaf pan, or even a sauce pan.

The plastic cup container is the Bread Starter. The large bag of dry ingredients is All-Purpose flour, sugar and 1/2 tsp salt. All that you need to add is cold water and 2 Tbsp of oil or butter to create a life form that will generate enough bread to last 100 lifetimes. Just mix, knead, proof, and bake. Then take care of your starter and it will continue to give you nourishment during this pandemic and beyond.
