Sun’s Out! Ultimate Summer Haircare Routine
Summer can be a tricky time when it comes to caring for your locks, as heat and lack of moisture can wreak havoc on the health of your hair. Here are a few tips and tricks will keep your hair healthy and have it camera-ready all day, every day.
Moisturize
Whether you leave your hair looking natural, use a ghd, or have curly or straight hair, moisturizing is one of the most important things you need to do during Summer. The hotter it is outside, the drier your hair will be.
Not only should you drink a lot of water, but you should also be using shampoo, conditioner, and treatments packed with moisturizer.
Protect Against the Sun
One of the first things you need to do is invest in a hat or hair scarf. Much like protecting your skin against the sun’s rays, you need to do the same for your hair to stop it from drying out and getting damaged.
While you can choose any hat, opt for something breathable, as it will stop you from sweating and making your hair too oily. A head scarf also does the job and is much more stylish for some.
Don’t Over-Shampoo
One thing you need to stop yourself from doing is over-shampooing. While this is difficult, as you will sweat and your hair will feel dirty, the last thing you want to do is strip your hair of its natural oils. While you don’t want oily hair, the natural protection your hair oil forms is good for it.
Be Careful with Hair Color
One thing to be aware of when looking after your hair in the Summer is to be careful with how often you colour your hair and which products you use. Whether you do highlights or you bleach your hair, colouring damages the hair for weeks, sometimes months.
This also extends to putting lemon juice or something similar in your hair in an attempt to colour it naturally; both of these processes will cause much more damage than usual when combined with the immense amount of dryness that the Summer heat can cause.
Reduce Exposure to Heat
Because of the natural heat in the air, it is best to avoid using hair dryers, straighteners, and curlers. Adding more heat to your hair will only speed up any damage, leaving your hair feeling very dry and brittle.
Eliminate Swimmers Hair
If you are blonde, you have most likely experienced swimmer’s hair before. The chemicals in pool water can often turn blonde and platinum hair a shade of green, which doesn’t come out after a couple of washes.
To avoid this, if you mix a ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar and two cups of water, and spray your hair down with the solution before you enter the water, it can stop your hair from sucking in too much chlorine.
Beach Hair Without the Beach
Everybody loves the beach hair look, but getting said look can be harmful to your hair. The salty water may give you great waves, but the combo can completely dry out and damage your hair.
To avoid this, mix a ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar and two cups of water. Spray your hair down with the solution before you enter the water to stop your hair from absorbing too much chlorine.
Use a Wide-Toothed Comb
Next, no matter the type of hair you have, once Summer rolls around, brushing it can cause a lot of damage. Your hair is going to be dry, and a hairbrush will tangle into your hair and pull out and damage strands far more than usual.
Instead, opt for a wide-toothed comb that will still let you brush your hair but won’t be as rough on your hair as a regular brush.
Routine
While those are a few things you should remember, here is a simple hair routine you can use regularly throughout the Summer to keep your hair looking and feeling great.
Detangle
Before you get in the shower, the first thing you need to do is detangle. Some knots shouldn’t be fixed in the shower as they will be worse than if your hair was dry, you will most likely cause more damage.
Shampoo
Grab your favourite hydrating shampoo and lather up. Really get into the roots of your hair and give your scalp a scrub and a massage.
Condition
One of the most important steps in your routine is conditioning. Be sure to cover your hair from root to tips and don’t be afraid to leave it in a bit longer than usual after a beach or pool outing.
Hair Mask
While a hair mask doesn’t need to be done every day, it should be done at least once a week. A hair mask will give you a deep condition, as well as giving your hair a lot of vitamins and minerals it can use to remain strong and healthy.
You can also find hair masks that have UV protection in them, making them perfect for Summer protection against the sun.
