The Pearl Hotel in San Diego
Walking into room 10 at the newly renovated, The Pearl Hotel in the Point Loma area of San Diego, I immediately wanted to downsize my life and move into a studio apartment designed just like the guest room.
The owners, The Casetta Group, worked with design studio Electric Bowery to create a new urban retreat and social hub. They decorated each of the 23 rooms at this mid-century style boutique hotel in soothing sand, ivory and taupe colors. The open-concept closet with shelves and wood hangars, a tissue box, wood hooks with custom-designed Finery bathrobes, and a framed photo of a pearl diver adds an artistic touch.
The low and comfortable platform bed is fitted with Parachute Home bedding, and a floating Acacia wood nightstand offers a charging outlet hidden inside.
There is a deep soaking bathtub and shower combination in the bathroom, plus large bottles of certified organic bath amenities by MoonCloth Designs.
Upon check-in, guests are texted a list of Mini Bar food and beverage items that can be delivered to your room upon request.
Outside my room, the sparkling iconic oyster-shaped pool, has marble topped tables and modern chairs for guests to relax, swim and work during the day. At night this area is transformed into festive poolside dining venue. They even offer a screen to display a full length movie on Wednesdays in the evenings during dinner at Charles + Dinorah, named after the previous owners of the iconic hotel. The chef curated menu offers fresh raw and grilled oysters; farm fresh roasted heirloom carrots with labneh and pistachio pistou with a sprinkling of fennel pollen; and shrimp tacos as some of the small plates. Larger plates include miso glazed black cod with forbidden rice; pork schnitzel; and a Pearl Burger on a Sadie Rose pretzel bun.
Happiest Hour is every Wednesday through Saturday beginning at 4 p.m., with discounted small plates and a selection of cocktails or mocktail from local San Diego proprietors such as You & Yours Distillery. Also on Wednesdays, guests can dine next to the pool and watch a full-length movie on a large hanging screen secured near rooms 10 and 11.
Start your day with complimentary coffee in the bar area and order breakfast ready for pick up in the lobby. Menu items include a quiche, chia pudding, mixed fresh fruit, cold brew and orange juice. They also offer a Nomadic Sparkling Wine to make a morning mimosa.
Besides sitting by the pool, guests can check out one of the complementary bicycles for a spin around the harbor or Shelter Island.
The Casetta Group elevates boutique hotels and motels into thoughtful lodging driven by upscale design and friendly service. Besides The Pearl Hotel, they also offer Casa Cody in Palm Springs and Marina Resort in Big Bear.
