Tips for an Amazing Smoky Mountains Vacation this Fall

Tips for an Amazing Smoky Mountains Vacation this Fall

The changing colors of the leaves mark the end of summer as they gradually fade from green to golds, oranges and reds. The temperature gets lower and we enter cooler territories, making it the perfect time to bring out some warmer attire and go on a vacation. Autumn is the perfect time to explore the Smoky Mountains.

This beautiful region stretches between the borders of Tennessee and North Carolina and is known for breathtaking outdoor spaces and its collection of trees and wildlife. There are over 100 species of trees changing their colors at this time of year and offer a once-in-a-lifetime experience each season. Here are some tips to make the most of your trip to the Smoky Mountains this fall:

Get Yourself Settled In

Luxury accommodations abound throughout the Smokies. This region has some of the most upscale cabins and villas that boast amenities you’ll find in city living, while nestled in the country hillside.  And most offer a gorgeous view of the picturesque scenery. Research the variety of Smoky Mountain cabin rentals, and select the space that suits your personal style.

There are cabins that are fitted with hot tubs, home theaters and don’t forget about the chef’s kitchen!

Take a Hike

Towards the end of the year, the Smoky mountains begin changing colors, and you’ll be surrounded by the warm shades of fall. The smell of dry leaves, their crispy texture, and the cool breeze should be enough motivation to put on your hiking shoes and hit the trails. The smokies are home to many species of trees, such as the American beech, which takes on a bright yellow this season, while the mountain ash and maple go for an angry red.

Consider going up Clingmans Dome to enjoy a panoramic view of the park and distinct silhouettes of the mountains in Tennessee and North Carolina. This is the highest mountain within the Smokies, stretching up to 6,600 feet, opening up to breathtaking views of the park below. The path is also paved adequately, making it easy for you to make your way up without falling. You can also go for a drive through familiar roads leading to the country, including Newfound gap road and the foothills with flora on both sides, adding to the leafy foliage.

The Popular Gatlinburg Attractions

Gatlinburg is a small tourist town towards the foothills of the Smokies. It has high-end restaurants, arts and crafts stores, and local shops from which you can purchase souvenirs. It brings in millions of tourists each year. Take advantage of the season and visit SkyLift Park, home to the longest pedestrian bridge, about 680 feet long, with tempered glass lining the bottom, giving it a 3D illusion. Seasonal Goodies

During the fall, there are many local favorite goodies to nibble.  Enjoying the warm bite of a baked apple pancake or a hot cup of cocoa can be the perfect end to a long day. You’ll find delicious pumpkin-themed treats, funnel cakes or grab some candy corn at the local country store. The Old Mill restaurant  is known for their pies, so don’t miss out on their southern-style Pecan pie.

The restaurant also makes the best Turkey and corn chowder, a seasonal staple and must-try. If you visit the Smokies in October, you can join the Oktoberfest at the Ober Gatlinburg. This German-themed festivity is filled with their infamous sausages and a locally crafted glass of beer, and folk music.

Fall is the perfect balance between winter’s coolness and summer’s warmth, with glorious views of the shedding leaves. The Smoky Mountain National Park is a celebrated local destination. It is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna and has some of the best southern restaurants. Enjoy!
