Pueblo Bonito Resorts in Mexico Celebrate Dia de los Muertos

While Halloween in the United States is a fun and spooky celebration with pumpkins, ghosts, costumes and candy, it’s completely different during this time of the year in Mexico, especially at Pueblo Bonito Resorts.

The seven resorts are decorated with marigold flowers, art installations and culinary delights to celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead).  Known as All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, this celebration of life-affirming joy is not to be missed. Each Pueblo Bonito Resort in Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, and Mazatlán during this time of the year offers unique culinary opportunities.

One of the first things guests will notice is colorful altars, also known as ofrendas in the lobby. These are also built in private homes, cemeteries, and along the sidewalks of town’s historic quarter. Altars are adorned with a favorite meal, family photos, and candles for each deceased relative.

Marigolds and monarch butterflies are common symbols during this time of the year. Orange and purple are typical colors to welcome spirits back to the realm of the living. Revelers don makeup and costumes, march in parades, and dance and party in the streets.

This main autumnal celebration in Mexico begins on the eve of October 31 through November 2. It’s a beautiful blend of Indigenous beliefs and Spanish customs honoring loved ones who have departed. This joyous and festive celebration also has an air of reflection. Some families spend the night in cemeteries hoping to reconnect with those who have passed away.
