Savour the Cape: Best Eateries in Cape Town
Cape Town has long been the home of many incredible restaurants, and while many have come and gone, some have remained and are easily a few of the best places to eat on the continent. Here are a few of the best eateries and restaurants in the Mother City.
Kloof Street House
Starting off with a venue that has been held in high regard for many years now, Kloof Street House, in the heart of the city, has almost perfected the art of serving up world-class food in a cosy, comfortable, and relaxing environment.
With exceptional dishes and wines that match the incredible Liquorland cask red wine, it has something for everyone, and is perfect for families, friends, date nights, and everything in between. Obi
Obi is a small Japanese restaurant on Long Street that you will most likely miss if you aren’t looking for it. However, inside you find delicious, authentic Japanese cuisine made by the team of talented chefs, led by Papa San and his decades of experience
Here, you will find fresh ramen, sushi, tempura, and many other delicacies that look and taste like they came straight from Tokyo itself. If you love traditional Japanese food, there is arguably no better place to get your fix than at Obi.
Belly of the Beast
If you want a huge dose of fine dining and a “menu” that is ever-changing, you need to make your way to Belly of the Beast on Harrington Street. Speaking of the menu, the restaurant doesn’t technically have one, as each day, there is a different set menu utilising the freshest local ingredients around.
Bookings are a must, as there is only one lunch and one dinner seating a day, but once you sit down and enjoy the high level of service and even better food, you will be glad you made the booking, even if it takes a while for it to be your turn.
The Pot Luck Club
Started by world-famous chef Luke Dale Roberts, The Pot Luck Club is one of the most recognized restaurants in Africa, and for good reason. Found in the Old Biscuit Mill, there is nothing bland or unimaginative about the food here.
You can find ultra-sophisticated tapas, a variety of wines, and exceptional desserts, all made with high-quality ingredients by chefs who could easily work at the best restaurants in the world. Bookings are essential, but this is one spot everyone should experience at least once.
La Colombe
Another establishment that needs no introduction is La Colombe. Found in the beautiful area of Constantia, La Colombe has received numerous awards, including being named the 49th best restaurant in the world, and the best restaurant in Africa.
Talking about it is never enough, as you need to sit down and enjoy the extraordinary and sometimes breathtaking food that is served in front of you. Even if you are in Cape Town for only one night, this is where you should have dinner.
Chef’s Warehouse @ Tintswalo Atlantic
With the sound of the waves crashing in the distance and incredible views of the mountains, just the setting of Chef’s Warehouse is an experience all on its own. However, throw in some of their world-class dishes, and that experience is taken to an entirely new level.
Paired with glasses of fine local wines, you can enjoy tapas-for-two that includes tuna belly, honey and oat brioche, and togarashi squid, to name a few. Plus, enjoying an espresso at the end of the meal on their deck can easily lead to you making another booking as soon as possible.
FYN
Led by Peter Tempelhoff, FYN is not a restaurant, but rather a vehicle that takes you on a culinary adventure like no other. With decades of experience under the belts of the chefs here, the goal of FYN is to take contemporary cuisine to the next level in every way possible.
Named as one of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2022, everything from the atmosphere, to the ingredients and the plating aims to arouse your every sense. Not to mention, their set menu is packed with flavor, including sashimi, Cape wagyu, and their affectionately named “Bok Box.”
Pier
The V&A Waterfront has changed a massive amount over the years, and with the additions of upmarket retailers like Gucci and Rolex not going amiss, it has always lacked a sophisticated, Michelin-star-worthy restaurant.
However, Pier is here to change that. Specialising in seafood but with dishes for all tastes, Pier is part of the La Colombe group, and that only means one thing: exceptional service and even better food.
Seven Colours Eatery
Another restaurant making its mark on the V&A, and Cape Town as a whole, is Seven Colours Eatery. With “seven colours” being a South African term used to describe the variety of food on your plate, this eatery aims to make it a sophisticated and memorable experience.
There are no ultra-fancy bells and whistles here. Instead, it is about the food, and bringing friends and families together to do one thing, and one thing only; eat delicious food and be merry.
