Must-Have Organic Wines from Northern California
California has an abundance of exceptional wines, and discovering new favorites is an exciting mission. Sommeliers and wine enthusiasts worldwide are inspired by wines that showcase distinct characteristics in a subtle and refined manner. This piece focuses on my selection of the highest-quality organic wines from six wineries in Northern California—they are a must-try for any wine lover.
Hamel Family Wines
Hamel Family Wines, a family-owned winery, is known for its commitment to organic farming. They produce small-batch wines using premium fruit grown in Sonoma Valley and Moon Mountain District Estate Vineyards. It all started in the early 2000s when Pamela and George Hamel, Jr. planted grapes behind their home in Sonoma. The couple is still at the helm and has a dedicated and intensively qualified team keeping their vision alive.
The 2018 Isthmus, a Bordeaux blend, is a wine that demands attention. It displays a sleek tannic structure while giving rich black fruits and Christmas spices a voice. ($90) Also made in an old-world style, the Isthmus 2019 has silkier tannins perfectly balanced with bright and courageous acidity.
The Nuns Canyon series is Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant, presenting pepper notes, leather, and coffee. While 2018 offers cherry pie notes ($160), 2019 shows wild berries and figs ($160). These wines pair well with grilled meats, aged cheeses, and dark chocolate desserts.
Tours of the winery and cave and seated tastings are welcome by appointment.
DaVero Farms & Winery
DaVero Farms & Winery is a place where nature and winemaking harmoniously coexist. The winery’s history is steeped in a deep respect for the land and a commitment to sustainable farming. They honor their habitat by using biodynamic farming methods and growing predominantly Italian varietals that thrive in their environment. This connection to their land and philosophy of ‘what belongs in our environment, grows in our vineyards’ makes their wines truly special.
Our visit to DaVero Farms & Winery was a truly unique experience. Guided by the ever-engaging founder and owner, Ridgely Evers, we were able to witness the expression of their work firsthand. We then indulged in the delightful combination of their wines and seasonal bites, all in the serene setting of their private enclosed patio nestled amongst the vines.
The 2019 “Umbriana” is a Sagrantino blend reminiscent of central Italy. Wild berries and earth medley synchronize with the firm tannins and lively acid. ($90). The 2014 Sagrantino releases aromas of mushrooms, cigar box, dried leaves, and potting soil while delivering its own nuances in flavors of plums, chalky minerals, and licorice. ($90)
Small and large groups can reserve garden flights and farm experiences depending on your desire. You won’t want to miss a visit to DaVero while in Healdsburg.
Neal Family Vineyards
Neal Family Vineyards stands as a pioneer in Napa Valley, being among the first wineries to receive regenerative organic certification. This commitment to sustainable farming is a testament to their dedication to both the land and their family. Their vineyards are nestled next to their family home as well as by the home that Mark Neal, owner and one of Napa’s most influential winemakers, was raised. The vines almost radiate the stories of three generations who infuse their creativity and ethics into each row.
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell Mountain Estates is a symphony of flavors, offering a wondrous balance of black raspberry liqueur, mocha, and graphite ($120). Meanwhile, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon from Rutherford Dust Vineyards teases the palate with its complexity of dark fruit, black tea, and forest floor ($120).
Visiting Neal Family Vineyards is not just a tour, it’s an immersive experience. Their personalized tours and tastings will lead you through their great legacy — by appointment.
Capo Creek Ranch
Capo Creek Winery’s ambiance evokes the idea of pairing food with wine. The owner, Mary Roy, also the chef, skillfully crafts her dishes, bringing sheer elegance to the table. Roy and her husband, Bob Covert, both physicians from Illinois, have been making superior wine in the Dry Creek Valley since 2013.
Roy goes above and beyond to ensure your time at Capo Creek captivates your soul by triggering every sense imaginable — the views, aromas, and flavors transport you to a place of magic. We had the most incredible and intimate al fresco pairing luncheon overlooking the vineyard I may have ever had. Every detail was taken care of, and the wine is some of the best in the region.
The 2021 Grenache Reserve is a magnificent wine with delicate candied red fruits, dried herbs, and enchanting notes of juicy oranges with a zingy peel ($85). The 2020 Open MIC, a GSMCC blend, yields perfection with exquisite dark fruit, faithful minerality, and Mediterranean spices ($85).
It is highly recommended that you make a reservation for a VIP premium chef and table with tour or, the ultimate wine and food pairing.

Follow the enticing fragrances of a verdant garden, and you’ll arrive at Quivira Vineyards. Their dedication to promoting biodiversity is evident in the quality of their wines. Owners Pete and Terri Kight are extraordinary stewards of their land and partner with various restaurants to promote farm-to-table dinners that feature fresh produce and wine from their property.
The 2020 La Follette Zephyr Chardonnay features notes of autumn pears, tropical fruit, and fresh cucumbers, culminating to a creamy finish ($60). The 2019 Berler Vineyard Fountain Grove District Cabernet Sauvignon boasts velvety tannins and luscious blackberry cassis with hints of cedar and tobacco ($85). Finally, their signature wine, the 2019 Black Boar Zinfandel, is made with grapes grown on the estate and blends flavors of baking spices, dark chocolate, and brambly berries ($55).
