A Review of Moonpod – The New Age Beanbag Chair
Most people have a childhood memory of a beanbag, whether it was a go-to seat at home or a fought-over favourite at school. But what about as adults? Can we really see ourselves getting home from work and sinking into a beanbag, of all things? It turns out that yes, many people are, and it’s called the Moonpod.
Is this new-age, high-end beanbag chair for you? Keep reading for a thorough Moonpod review.
What is it and how does it work?
The Moonpod is a bean-shaped, cushion-like chair with a long, rounded shape and a curved indent in the centre. It looks like a smoother, more compact beanbag that has been stretched out slightly to accommodate full-sized grown-ups. From the get-go, the Moonpod has a lot to live up to considering the tagline “anti-anxiety float chair”.
The Moonpod is fairly versatile, as you can sit, recline, or lay down on it, which bodes well for watching TV, reading, and light napping. However, it appears that the Moonpod is a little difficult to curl up in and really snuggle into for a decent nap. It’s not quite long enough for this, so the feet are likely to remain on the floor or hanging over the edge of the pod. Plus, if you’ve got knee or issues or general mobility issues you may have issues with this, as it requires you to get up and down from a fair height.
The great thing about this kind of item is that it’s portable and can lend itself to various uses around the house without having to commit to one space. Several Moonpod reviews mention gaming as a prime use for it, and it’s easy to see why with the propped-up neck and reclining position. It would also be handy for creating a portable reading or study spot you can move around the house depending on where you can find quiet.
What is it made of?
It proves tough to find out exactly what materials make up the Moonpod, but what’s for sure is the cover is machine washable (as you’d expect considering the price range and modern design).
If there’s one thing that can ruin a beanbag chair and make it completely obsolete it’s flattened, unsupportive beads. Fortunately, Moonpod reviews complaining of this issue are hard to come by (if at all), as the EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) beads live up to their job. In saying that, the Moonpod has only been on the market for just under a year and a half so time may tell. It will be interesting to see if Moonpod reviews a year or two from now tell another story.
Colour and size options?
The Moonpod currently comes in one size, measuring in at approximately “50-56 x 20-24 x 20-24 inches” (the shape and size changes depending on how it’s being used and who is using it). It weighs about 12 pounds, which is very light by most people’s standards, so you won’t break your back each time you move it from spot to spot.
For now, there are five colour options: space grey, cosmic ash, moon indigo, rose quartz, and Neptune blue. This is a pretty rounded line-up of colours, but it would be nice to see a few brighter options for people who aren’t inclined to choose muted shades for their home decor.
What is the price point?
The Moonpod currently runs at $399, (or $299.25 if you can catch the current sale). This is no cheap chair, especially considering you could grab a bean bag for a fraction of the cost, or even a reasonably high-quality armchair.
Any cons?
For now, the Moonpod is only available in the USA, which is disappointing for the rest of the world in dire need of relaxation. Plus, it would be great to see the Moonpod a little larger so you could really get curled-up and cosy, so you’ll have to settle for a reclined nap and forgo an all-encompassed snooze.
Is it for you?
If you’re constantly finding yourself craving a place to rest that isn’t your bed (too tempting to sleep for hours), or the couch (too rigid) but you don’t want to shell out for an entirely new sofa, the Moonpod could be ideal. However, if you’re very tall or have knee issues, the functionality may be void, making it a very costly and possibly unused beanbag taking up space.
