A Travel Guide to Newport, Rhode Island

If you’re looking for a unique city experience, Newport, RI is one of the most exciting, culturally rich places to be!

Steeped in history, it’s one of only a handful of cities founded well before the Revolutionary War. It’s the hub of New England’s “Classic Coast” and features terrific restaurants (it’s a seafood lover’s paradise), modern museums, and some of the oldest mansions in the country.

The best part? It’s all framed by miles of gorgeous coastline and breathtaking panoramic views. They might just persuade you to find a rental apartment and settle down for a while.

Read on for some suggestions for things to see and do in beautiful Newport!

Newport Rhode Island

History and Culture

From the oldest tavern in America to the Newport Art Museum, Newport has a perfect mix of old and new attractions to educate and entertain! You’ll enjoy their taverns-to-pub restaurants that will surely make your visit unforgettable. Here are just a few bucket-list things to do in the city if you’d like to explore its rich history and culture:

  • Tour a Gilded-Age Newport Mansion

Want to walk the halls of opulent summer cottages owned by some of the wealthiest families in US history? The Breakers, Marble House, and Beechwood are just a few examples of the mansions that made Newport a playground for American dynasties like the Vanderbilt’s and the Astin’s.

With all those magnificent and artistically planned brick mansions, you’ll want to learn more about how they came to be. Check out the Preservation Society of Newport County for more info on tours and exhibition installments.

  • Visit one of the largest military forts in America.

Named for the second president of the US, Fort Adams is not only an impressive study in military construction, but it also provides a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of some of the officers who served there back in the mid to late 1800s.

Explore its underground tunnels, enjoy its spectacular bay views, or stay the night and take part in a paranormal investigation — no matter what you choose to do at Fort Adams, you won’t be disappointed.

  • Take in some live music.

Aside from being a fascinating historical attraction, Fort Adams state park hosts the Newport Jazz Festival and Newport Folk Festival in the summertime. Are you a classical music fan? Newport Classical has you covered with its chamber series and a variety of community concerts in locations all over the city.

Outdoor Activities

Do you want to have a good time in the great outdoors? Newport has some of the most relaxing scenic outdoor activities, thanks to its gorgeous waterfront. This ocean view, which is within walking distance of downtown, will entice you with its stunning sand and beach shoreline. If fresh ocean air and a panoramic view of the coastline is what you’re looking for, here are some places you can’t miss:

  • Cliff Walk

One of the most iconic things to do in the city, Newport’s 3.5 mile Cliff Walk is the perfect place to stroll the shoreline and take in some natural scenery. Because it’s a National Recreation Trail located in a National Historic District, you can enjoy some of Rhode Island’s native flora and fauna and marvel at Newport’s architectural beauty at the same time.

  • Brenton Point State Park

If you love hiking, saltwater fishing, or just hanging out for a lazy afternoon picnic, Brenton Point is one of the most famous places to chill out along Newport’s idyllic coastline — just be sure to bring your camera!

  • Easton’s Beach

Out of Newport’s four beaches, Easton’s Beach is the largest. Known as First Beach to the locals, not only is it a great place to get some sun and sand therapy, but you can also even get some surfing in if the weather’s right. Easton’s Beach also features a year-round aquarium, a vintage 1950’s carousel, and hosts a summertime family concert series. If you get peckish, the snack bar is a stone’s throw away.

Restaurants and Nightlife

As you might imagine, Newport is home to some of the best seafood on the East Coast ! Their place will seduce you with its al fresco dining and delicious cuisine. If you’re looking to get out for an evening of libations, lobster, and city lights, here are some of Newport’s most iconic spots to eat, drink, and be merry:

  • Midtown Oyster Bar

Midtown is everything you could ever want in a raw bar and more! Not only can you expect a fantastic assortment of some of the freshest oysters you’ll ever slurp, but they also offer fresh lobster, crab, clams, and more. If shellfish isn’t your cup of tea, they have a delicious selection of non-shellfish dishes too.

  • Newport Vineyards and Taproot Brewing Company

Wine connoisseurs are in for a serious treat at Newport Vineyards! Whether you prefer a rich and earthy pinot or crisp and dry rose, they’ve got you covered. It’s also no surprise to learn they make some of the best seafood-pairing wines around.

If you’re a die-hard beer lover, the winery is also home to the Taproot Brewing Company. While all of their seasonal selections are great, the pumpkin ale is the perfect beverage for fall weather.

The food at the winery is terrific, too, with a farm-to-table focused menu packed with selections of artisanal cheeses, decadent baked goods, an excellent charcuterie offering, and more.

  • Pour Judgement Bar & Grill

If you want to park it somewhere low-key and laid-back for the evening, Pour Judgement is an excellent choice. With well-above-par bar food and a fabulous drink selection, it’s the ideal place to wind down after a busy day.

Get Ready to Fall in Love…

Whether you’re a full-time resident living in a fashionable downtown Newport apartment or are vacationing at a cozy bed and breakfast along the Cliff Walk, the city has something for everyone. Newport has a lot to offer for residents and visitors, whether it’s a charming downtown or a breezy seaside.

Be aware: if you’re “just passing through,” Newport, RI, will entertain you with its fantastic seafood, local tourism, and lovely scenery, but its infectious charm will make you want to stay for good!
