While walking along the cobblestone streets in the historic center, the Basilica Cathedral of Mazatlán is an architectural Baroque-Revival style showstopper. Construction of the church began in 1856, yet when funds ran low to continue construction, a wealthy Jewish family in Mazatlán donated funds to complete the church. It is the world’s only Roman Catholic Church with the 28 Stars of David displayed in the stained glass windows. These were installed in gratitude for the donation of construction funds.

One of the longest Malecon’s in Mexico

Just down the street from the resort is the Malecon de Mazatlán running along the Pacific Ocean. It’s the longest in the world covering 13 miles. Besides a pedestrian walking path, there is also a bike path along the waterfront featuring statues of a deer to represent the city’s name, another with multiple dolphins representing the Continuity of Life and a monument to fisherman representing one of the city’s leading economies.

Mazatlan parades are spectacular

In November the city celebrates Dia de Muertos with altars, parades, theatrical performances and fireworks. Then in February to March, Mazatlán has the third largest Carnival in the world, just behind Rio de Janeiro and New Orleans. It’s the oldest carnival in Mexico, dating back to 1898. Carnival 2022 is scheduled for February 24 to March 1, offering a week of nonstop festivities, parades with enormous floats and costumed dancers, three elected Carnival queens and one king, evening fireworks and music all throughout the area.

Through the evolution Mazatlán, German immigrants brought brass bands to Mexico. Up and down the beach there is a fusion of German polka and Mexican music serenading locals and visitors walking and playing in the sand.
