Signature NYFW SS24 Runway Hairstyles – Backstage With All Things Hair

Signature NYFW SS24 Runway Hairstyles – Backstage With All Things Hair

New York Fashion Week (NYFW SS24) has once again taken the fashion world by storm, and this year, it’s not just the clothing that’s turning heads. The All Things Hair team have been busy backstage, making notes on the freshest catwalk hair styles. From the luxurious ‘Satin Strands’ to the edgy ‘Downtown Bun’, fashionistas looking to stay ahead of the curve can embrace these iconic hair trends, bringing a touch of NYFW glamor to their everyday style.

Ballet-Inspired Styles

The two ballet-inspired styles below are created by Unilever Stylist and Celebrity Hair Artist, Lacy Redway, for Christian Siriano’s show. They are a new take on the trending ‘Lazy Perfectionist’ hair looks. They may seem simple at first glance, but have an added twist that makes them memorable.

Redway says: “My inspiration started from the clothes. The moment I saw the softness of the color tones, the richness of the fabrication, and the beautiful layering of the tulle details of the gowns in Christian’s studio, I knew to best support the looks I had to keep the hair feeling soft with clean girl aesthetic but put together like you would expect to see a ballerina fairy who twirls down the runway.”

How to get the look

  1. Prep your strands with a heat protection spray such as TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Heat Protect Spray, then smooth hair mousse onto the roots before blow drying with a flat paddle brush to create a pin-straight finish.

  2. Use a flat iron to straighten strands, then spray fine hairspray on to a paddle brush and run through hair to smooth away flyway’s and give a silky smooth finish.

  3. Add extra hydration and shine by adding a serum to the ends of your hair.

  4. Lift small sections of your hair, then back comb underneath and spritz with hairspray to give the hair grip. After that, use a bobby pin to secure a ribbon that is the same length as your hair to your roots and, voilà, satin hair extensions!

Barre Braids

How to get the look

  1. Prep your hair with a hydrating mousse such as TRESemmé Extra Hold Mousse to give it grip for styling. Run the mousse through the roots of your hair and down to the ends.

  2. Next, create a part from the top of the ears all the way around the crown of the head. Then separate the top section into two smaller sections by parting the hair down the middle.

  3. Dutch braid each section towards the nape of the neck, then bring the two sections together, and fasten with an elastic. Use a touch of gel to the braids to flatten any flyaways.

  4. Braid the remaining hair, then loop the braids into a bun. Use an elastic and secure the entire style with hairspray.

  5. Finish off by looping a ribbon through the top of the braids, and continue threading the ribbon through the style like a corset, wrapping around the loop of the bun, and letting the ends hang loose.

Gothic Aesthetic Styles

Gothic aesthetics with a modern twist have been making their way into hair trends, going beyond the color black to showcase a more modern aesthetic that’s still tough and cool.

Downtown Updo/Bun

The Downtown Updo was seen on the runway during Khaite’s NYFW SS24 show. This updo shows how to style hair in a chic way, while still looking effortless.

Guido Palau, Celebrity Hair Artist says “This collection is very chic, so I wanted to create a style that complimented the vibe of the clothes with a natural downtown feel. The TRESemmé products allow the look to feel natural, while still creating the toughness we were going for, rather than a soft, romantic style.”

How to get the look

  1. Apply TRESemmé Extra Hold Mousse to your hair. This will provide the necessary hold while giving your hair a textured, touchable appearance that exudes a strong, confident vibe. Then apply serum to add a beautiful glossy finish to your hair.

  2.  Gather your hair and create a ponytail, securing it with an elastic. Leave the ponytail incomplete by not pulling all of your hair through. This deliberate styling choice ensures a slightly disheveled and effortlessly cool appearance.

  3.  Use hairpins to secure the shape of your hairstyle. Then, lightly use hairspray to control your hair without making the style stiff or unmanageable.

Ship-wrecked Finger Waves

The Shipwrecked Finger Waves were seen on the runway for Jason Wu’s NYFW SS24 show. This wet, mermaid-like aesthetic is reminiscent of punk and gothic motifs that have been making their way down runways throughout the season.

Jimmy Paul, Celebrity Hair Artist says: “There is a deconstructed element to this collection. In speaking with Jason Wu, I wanted to create a look that felt like the models just emerged from a shipwreck. The TRESemmé products allowed us to achieve a wet, nearly drenched appearance without sacrificing the fluid movement of the natural hair texture.”

How to get the look

  1. Firstly, divide the hair into smaller sections: four on the bottom and four on the top. Then, spray each section with water using a spray bottle. Once dampened, apply a lot of TRESemmé TRES Two Mega Firm Control Gel to each section until the hair is soaked. After that, use a comb to distribute the gel from root to end.

  2. Now that the hair is sectioned and drenched in gel, apply serum throughout to impart shine and a reflective, wet look. Then, scrunch a little bit of mousse into each section of the hair to add texture and hold.

  3. After prepping the hair, make a deep side part with a finger wave swoop across the forehead. Use a rat tail comb to make the part and wave quickly. After this step, simply brush the rest of the hair behind the ear. PRO TIP: Set the wave in place with a cover clip and remove it once dry.

  4. Finish the look with hairspray to set the amazing finger waves without leaving the hair stiff.

Hair expert from All Things Hair, Milena Prinzi talks about her favorite look for NYFW SS24:

“During my NYFW backstage visits,I noticed a real evolution in wet hairstyles this season. They were at the forefront for the Spring-Summer collections of 2024 and presented a huge innovation with their drenched, soaked, and dripping finish. It’s like wet hair on steroids! It seemed like each style took at least two bottles of hair gel. Upon asking, I learned that the stylists also applied hair serum after the gel to seal in the wetness and let the hair dry for a while before styling.”
