The Art inspired Hotel SLO

The Art inspired Hotel SLO

Opening in 2019, the luxe Hotel San Luis Obispo celebrates creativity, culture and art with its contemporary design and 16 different installations made exclusively for the hotel by California artists.

Fun & Games at Hotel SLO – Jill Weinlein

Located in the walkable city of San Luis Obispo, the Hotel SLO is in the historic Chinatown neighborhood. Paying homage to the area is a Moongate living wall near the valet station. Art mediums range from paintings, works on paper, large-scale installations and murals. Each of the pieces were thoughtfully selected to represent and embrace the cultural history and natural surroundings of San Luis Obispo.

One of the eye-catching pieces in the collection is a hand cut map of SLO by Matthew Picton. He integrates anthropological and historical narratives into his large-scale multiple-layer piece. There are some artifacts included that were discovered when building the hotel.

Windy Chien art – Jill Weinlein

Another spectacular art piece is located in Piadina, one of four culinary and beverage onsite venues at the hotel. The dramatic 24-foot rope installation is by San Francisco-based artist Windy Chien. It’s a nod to SLO’s marriage of agricultural and coastal living using the modern California craft-form of knotting.

Private dining room at Ox and Anchor – Jill Weinlein

The fine dining Ox + Anchor, offers a contemporary atmosphere to a classic steakhouse. There is a hand-cut paper installation by Los Angeles-based artist Chris Natrop that meanders along the bar wall. Painted in the bright greens and subtle browns of the changing SLO hillsides, the piece compliments the natural materials in the restaurant’s modern design. In the private dining room, guests may select from a carefully-curated list of Central Coast wines, keeping their special meal in the local “terroir” from plate to glass.

Colorful art on each floor – Jill Weinlein

On the 2nd and 3rd floors there is a playful burst of color by artist Leo Bersamina. His driftwood found on many coastal adventures are hand-painted and installed on a wall with dowels.

Light and bright rooms – Jill Weinlein

Guest rooms and suites are spacious, bright and playful in color and art. Over the bed is a wood knot by San Francisco-based artist Katie Gong. Hand-made Nani Marquina rugs offer a pop of color on beautiful white oak floors. The comfortable beds have pillowy down comforters and deluxe linens with decorative pillows. Step into the light-filled bathroom, with a large walk-in shower, after relaxing in cozy slippers with the hotel’s logo, or wearing one of the plush royal blue bathrobes. Curated in-room complimentary snacks include artisan cookies and chips.

Each floor has a water station – Jill Weinlein

Hotel SLO is a green hotel offering reusable water bottles in the mini-refrigerator of every guest room. Refill stations on each floor provide sparkling and flat purified water. There are charging stations for electrical vehicles, and hotel bicycles are available for guests to use during their stay.

A favorite spot of hotel guests and locals is The Rooftop High Bar for sipping a pumpkin martini and craft cocktail (they make a refreshing perfect margarita). Local fare includes pizzas and small plates with herbs from the chef’s garden. Play a game of bocce ball on the rooftop court and enjoy the stellar sunset views of the rolling hills.

The 50-foot terrace heated swimming pool is ideal for laps. Nearby is a small Jacuzzi and poolside service from S.Low Bar. Also near the pool area is the Spa offering a broad range of rejuvenating skin and body treatments, a steam room with Himalayan salt wall, and relaxing lounge areas.
