Turn Your Bedroom Into a Luxury Hotel Suite with These 10 Tips

Some people stay at luxury hotels just for the sake of catching up on their slumber — and, frankly, we don’t blame them. From the king-size bed to the sheets that feel like they were handwoven by angels, luxury hotels ooze relaxation and comfort.

But why pay hundreds of dollars for a five-star hotel suite when you could have vacation-worthy sleep every night? Whether it’s slipping into crisp sheets or lounging in a weighted robe after a long day, recreating the same vibe as a luxury hotel suite is easier than you might think. Read on for 10 tips on how to transform your ordinary bedroom into a first-class hotel room.

1. Triple sheet your bed. Ever wonder what makes a hotel bed look so crisp and clean? It’s all about the sheets. In addition to choosing sheets with high thread counts, hoteliers use a method called “triple sheeting” to make hotel beds look and feel more luxurious. This method involves putting a thin blanket between two sheets, which eliminates the need for a duvet cover and makes laundering more efficient. Learn how to do it yourself with this step-by-step guide from Hunker.

2. Invest in a good pillow or two. Luxury hotels are known for providing their guests with more pillows than they actually need. As it turns out, there’s a good reason for this. Everyone has different pillow preferences, so hoteliers hedge their bets by providing guests with a range of high-quality pillows with varying degrees of firmness. Thankfully, you only need to invest in one or two premium down pillows to get that sumptuous experience in your own home.

3. Prep your bedside table. Five-star hotels pride themselves on ensuring that guests have everything they need for a comfortable stay. While you may not have a front desk to call on, you can recreate a similar experience by keeping a few must-have essentials on your nightstand. Simple yet luxurious items like a weighted eye mask, a water carafe and bottle of lotion can help make your bedtime routine more efficient — and a lot more relaxing!

4. Warm up your lighting. Lighting is everything in a hotel room. After all, nobody wants to shell out hundreds of dollars on a hotel suite only to have harsh, fluorescent lighting shining down on their face while they’re in bed. To help their guests wind down in the evenings, hotels often use reading lamps and hardwired wall sconces with warm-colored bulbs. Who says you can’t do the same? For couples, reading lights that are individually controlled are a must-have. And if you don’t want to pay an electrician to hardwire wall sconces, you could always install plug-in wall sconces instead.

5. Freshen up the walls. A fresh coat of paint can instantly make your bedroom feel like a brand-new space. Mass hotel chains are particularly fond of the Southwest color palette, so if you’re trying to make your bedroom look high-end, aim for the exact opposite. You can’t go wrong with neutrals in the form of crisp whites, cool greys and versatile greige. Bored by neutrals? Try adding architectural interest to your space with a board and batten feature wall

6. Treat your feet to a soft rug. Most hotel rooms have carpeted floors because they’re soft, warm and help with noise reduction. If you have hardwood floors in your bedroom, consider getting an area rug to save your toes from chilly mornings. For maximum comfort and warmth, choose a shag or micro-plush rug that feels good under your feet.

7. Wrap yourself in a cozy robe. There is nothing better than slipping into a luxurious cozy robe at the end of the day. Upscale hotels are famous for providing guests with ultra-soft bathrobes that promote relaxation. If you want to recreate this vacation-level comfort at home, try wearing a weighted robe before bedtime. Just like the increasingly popular weighted blanket, weighted robes work by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps lower your heart rate and leads to an overall feeling of calmness.

8. Use appealing scents. Step inside any luxury hotel spa and one of the first things you’ll probably notice is the divine smell. From calming florals like lavender and rose to beachy scents such as Moroccan oil and coconut, certain scents can evoke feelings of calm and relaxation. Experiment with different scents in your bedroom until you find one that transports your mind to another place. Consider an essential oil sleep diffuser that can double as a soft nightlight.

9. Make sure everything has a place. Your bedroom probably doesn’t come with a housekeeping service, which means it’s up to you to keep it clean and tidy. One way to keep your bedroom looking nice and sparkly is by upping your organization skills. Get your clutter under control by using under the bed storage, closet storage systems and stylish catchall trays.

10. Embrace local art and decor. When it comes to selecting decor for your bedroom, think local. Upscale hotels often display artwork and décor that has a strong connection to their surroundings. For instance, a luxury hotel near the beach might hang an ocean-themed piece of art or display a blue marlin statue in the lobby. Luxury hotels may also display artwork from prominent artists in the area. Don’t have a local art gallery in your hometown? Etsy is a great place to find regional art that speaks to you.
