5 Tips For Biking To Work In The Summer

Most cyclists are thrilled at the first glimpse of the warm summer sun because they get a chance to enjoy biking to work. Although the warmer temperatures are welcome after the chilly winter season, it does not mean that cycling under the hot summer sun comes without its own fair share of challenges. Cycling to work during summer is healthy and environmentally friendly but you must be equipped with some handy tips if you want to enjoy riding in the hot temperatures.

Here are five tips to help you stay cool and fresh as you bike to work in summer:

Plan the Ride Carefully

One mistake that people make is to assume they will be okay just because it’s a ride from home to work and vice versa. Whenever you decide to cycle to work during summer, take some time to plan and prepare. Compare different routes and pick the one that has plenty of shade and convenient stopovers. Routes that have lots of trees will provide more shade on the journey.

Use bike lanes when available to keep a safe distance from cars. Don’t bike during the hottest hours of the day, between noon and 2 PM. Remember to carry extra cash for water and for a bus ride in case you feel too fatigued to cycle back home.

Dress Appropriately For The Heat

To remain cool and comfortable when biking in summer, always dress appropriately. Wear clothes that are designed to wick away the sweat so that you can remain dry. Use sunscreen, wear a hat and sunglasses.

Ladies, if you need to wear a skirt or a dress, wear a pair of bike shorts underneath, just in case there is a breeze along the way.

Stay Well Hydrated

Always make sure you drink water before your ride but avoid drinking too much water as this can cause cramping. Have enough water to cover your entire round trip.

For trips longer than an hour pack fluids filled with electrolytes to help maintain your sodium levels during the ride and prevent heat exhaustion.

Let The Bike Carry Your Stuff

A backpack is an option for carrying personal items for a biker, but consider using the bike rack instead. You’re less likely to incur back pain and you’ll maintain more control of the bike. The extra gear can increase sweating, so let the bike carry the load.

Replenish Your Energy Stores

When biking for long in the hot summer temperatures, it is prudent to pack a snack that is rich in carbohydrates and proteins. This will help you to replenish the energy that you use while cycling. You can make stopovers to have a small bite every now and then. Remember to take some healthy snacks right immediately after the ride.

More than anything else, you need to have the right bike that suits your lifestyle. Whether you’re looking for a nice selection of men’s bicycles, women’s gear or simply searching for amazing city bikes for sale. Be sure to take the time to find a bike that is right for you. Enjoy cycling to work and always be safe.
