A Taste of Japan for the Holidays

A Taste of Japan for the Holidays

While working at Google in Mountainview, CA, Danny Taing dreamed of traveling to Japan and learning Japanese. Securing a job at Rakuten, a Japanese electronic commerce and online retailing company based in Tokyo, he had the opportunity to move to Tokyo and immerse himself with Japanese culture. One of his favorite discoveries was Japanese snack food.

Before coming back to the states, he would fill his suitcase with creatively designed and packaged snack items to share with his friends at home. Each snack has a story, and as he shared where he first discovered a particular snack, he came up with the idea to hard to find Japanese snacks and treats to America.

Danny created Bokksu is a Japanese snack subscription box filled with limited edition and hard to find artisanal treats. At first he packed each box in his home, but soon his business blossomed and he hired a team to help him discover unique and tasty Japanese treats.

Since we all can’t travel to exotic locales, such as Tokyo, receiving a Bokksu box is the next best thing to wandering the streets of Kyoto, Okinawa and Osaka without leaving your house.

Other Japanese snack subscription services use mass-produced mainstream snacks that can be found in most Asian markets outside of Japan. However the team at Bokksu have built relationships with local snack makers in Japan who produce unique artisanal snacks. These snacks are as rich in culture as the people who make them. Many have been made for over 200 years.

What is unique to each Bokksu box is a hand selected tea pairing is included to sip and enjoy with the month’s flavorful treats. Inside the box is also a thank you post card and ‘Seasons of Japan’ booklet describing each snack and a story about each item in the box.

Bokksu allows you to send one box to yourself or to family or friends. You can also join the monthly subscription to receive the tastes, flavors and textures of Japanese delights every 30 days.

For those looking for specific treats, Bokksu has a specialty grocery section, the Bokksu Market, where you can purchase individual hard to find snacks including limited edition Kit Kats in flavors like Sakura Nihonshu Sake, Otono No Amasa Citrus Mint, and Salt Lychee.

And with the holidays coming up, Bokksu makes the perfect gift for those love everything about Japan.
