Book Review: On The Road With The Cooking Ladies, Let’s Get Grilling

Phyllis Hinz and Lamont Mackay, The Cooking Ladies, have outdone themselves one more time with another exceptional, entertaining, easy to follow cookbook. At Luxe Beat Magazine we are familiar with their outstanding work, as they are contributors, and I personally met them when I was president of the International Food Wine & Travel Writers Association.

These two women continue on an ongoing lifelong journey of food and exploration. You may see their stylish motorhome on the highways or back roads of Canada and the United States, but they have also made it to Mexico and the Arctic Circle. On the rare occasion they are not on the road, they do have a home base on the north shore of Lake Erie.

Rather than spend so much time on their background (which could take pages), I want to tell you about Let’s Get Grilling.

Cookbooks come in all different formats. Having co-authored two, I know the layout is always a challenge. This book is exceptional. The cover has flaps that make it easy to mark the pages you are referencing.

After the usual intro, you have terrific, useful tips and a temperature guide,

Recipes are divided well by categories and provide some fascinating history with intriguing photos.

Americans will be happy to know the measurements are shown in the English measurements, and for international readers, they are also shown using the metric scale. I have done these conversions myself, and know the extra effort involved, so I say “thank you” on behalf of Americans who don’t know the metric system.

This book is a fun read and your taste buds will come alive with dishes like the Maple Salmon Cubes; Brined, Rubbed, & Cherry-Smoked Wings; Open-Faced Steak Bruschetta Sandwich; Sweet Onion Cheese Pie; Strawberry Orange Temptation. The list could go on and on, for almost everything you could desire is covered, along with stories about all you encounter living life on the road.

Even if you don’t like to grill, I believe you will enjoy sharing their adventure as they highlight North American grilling cuisine at its finest. They ventured from Philly Cheesesteaks to Smoked Memphis-style Dry Ribs. Join them for the ride.

The authors were willing to share a recipe with us, so treat your tastebuds to this Rocky Point Shrimp Cocktail.

If you wish to purchase Lets Get Grilling from The Cooking Ladies, it is available on Amazon. I would really like to hear from you, as to how you enjoy their adventures. To learn more about The Cooking Ladies, Phyllis Hinz and Lamont Mackay, go to www.thecookingladies.com.
