Don’t Let an Unmaintained Vehicle Ruin Your Travel Plans

If you’re making plans to travel somewhere soon, it’s important that you plan the entire event early and thoroughly. While planning for things like your luxury accommodations and other details surrounding the trip, don’t forget about your vehicle if you’re going to drive to your destination. That’s because a minor issue could snowball into a major problem that impacts your travel plans and puts you in what’s essentially an emergency. Here are some of the things that you should do to make sure that your vehicle is in a secure enough state to serve you efficiently while you’re on the road.

Take Your Vehicle for Service

The first thing that you ought to do before you travel is to take your vehicle for service. This is an important measure regardless of how far away you’ll drive, especially if it’s been a while since you had service done and the next session is not yet due. Keep in mind that the average distance that a car’s going to travel before it needs repairs done to its transmission is between 150,000 and 200,000 miles, even on the most high-end vehicles. You can use this as a rough guide for when you need to take additional measures to secure the state of your ride. All the same, if you have a reliable mechanic, they should advise you accordingly and ensure that you don’t set out with a vehicle that’s at risk of developing issues unexpectedly.

Pack a Travel Emergency Kit

Next, while you should drive safely and make sure that you follow all the rules of the road, it’s impossible to accurately predict how any given journey will end. For this reason, you need to pack a travel emergency kit and take it with you when you hit the road. This kit should include items like a flashlight, a first aid kit, an emergency roadside flare, a map or navigation device, and jumper cables. These are things that need to be in your car all the time, but it’s additionally important to make sure that you have them when you head out on a road trip.

With a well-stocked emergency travel kit, you’ll be better prepared for various roadside emergencies either involving the car itself or the passengers and driver. If there’s something that’s out of place, however, head to your auto shop and get it fixed rather than believing that you’ll deal with it if it gets worse on the road. This is bound to cost you a lot of time and money, adding unnecessary issues to your road trip. One of the main things that could force you to head to your mechanic immediately is if you notice a vibration emanating from your vehicle’s undercarriage. That’s because this is one of the most common signs that you have a bad drive shaft, which is just an example of the issues that can occur while on the road.

Change and Top Off the Various Fluids

There are a number of fluids that you need to keep at the right levels to avoid damage to your vehicle. These include brake fluid, power steering fluid, windshield wiper fluid, engine oil, and transmission fluids. Driving your car with these fluids lower than they should expose its various parts to extensive damages that will cost a lot more to repair than it would have cost to simply top up the fluids. For instance, failure to top up the transmission fluid can damage the transmission and other parts of the engine and leave you with an extremely high auto repair bill. This is even more the case for luxury cars, most of which come exclusively with an automatic transmission that normally offers between six and nine speeds.

If you can get these details taken care of before you start your trip, you can enjoy considerable peace of mind on the road. Make sure that you also have the contact information of roadside assistance professionals. This way, you’ll not be likely to spend a good part of your trip dealing with car trouble.
