Surf, Sip & Stroll at the Del Mar Beach Hotel

Every time we visit the charming town of Del Mar in San Diego County, we discover something new and appealing in the coastal enclave. Known for its historic horse racing track, beachfront homes, scenic parks, easy walking and biking trails, quaint shops and restaurants, the quality of life seems idyllic.

Del Mar made its name as one of the best surf spots, when in 1963, The Beach Boys sang the line, “You’d catch ’em surfin at Del Mar” in their hit song ‘Surfin USA’. The stretch of sand and ocean in back of Del Mar Beach Hotel remains one of the most coveted surf spots in San Diego county with conditions ideal for all skill levels.

Recently the new, oceanfront boutique hotel opened in mid-June, 2022, after undergoing a multi-million dollar redesign. It is now the only upscale, laid-back beach hotel in town.

The minute you are greeted at the front lobby, guests receive a glass of wine before taking in the spectacular views while walking to their room. There is a Cruvinet Wine Dispenser located in the lobby offering a rotating selection of curated wines by the glass.

There are 46 coastal chic guest rooms decorated with coastal art. Our guest room #209 offered images of waves on the back wall, with sandy beige with blue accents mirroring the beach outside our door. The king size bed was fitted with luxury linens and plenty of pillows.

Inside the stylish bathroom was a rainhad-style shower, Lather Organics bath products, and comfy Frette Terry robes.

Take your glass of wine to one of the ocean-view terrace lounge chairs to soak in the sun and ocean views. There are comfortable chairs and fire tables flickering in the evening for guests to stay warm while watching the sunset and listening to the waves crash. The terrace also has an outdoor foot and body shower to use after taking a stroll along the beach.

The hotel runs along a portion of California’s Historic US 101. It’s the longest U.S. route in the state and was one of the original national routes established in 1926. Also guests will notice the AMTRAK Pacific Surfliner rolling in front of the hotel.

Dining options are located just steps from the hotel. Local favorite restaurants in Del Mar, include Poseidon, Jake’s and up the hill at Pacifica in Del Mar Village.

Guests have a variety of walking options from the hotel that include a walk to Torrey Pines State Beach, or a few miles to the border of Solana Beach. For those who wish to explore additional sights in San Diego, just a short drive away is scenic hiking trails at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, and the 1,200 acre Balboa Park, known for its beautiful gardens, 17 museums, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Also, the Del Mar Racetrack begins its Bing Crosby horse racing season on November 11, 2022.
