The Cormorant La Jolla’s Newest Boutique Hotel
On the corner of Prospect Ave in La Jolla Village, The Cormorant La Jolla is a newly opened boutique hotel offering 26 luxe designed guest rooms and a rooftop lounge and bar.
Famed interior designer Rebecca Kenny from the design firm Greenwood & Black worked with Manoj Chawla, Managing Partner of Oceanic Enterprises to create a relaxing and stylish vacation getaway in San Diego.
Together they achieved their vision by reconfiguring the exterior and top floor suites with sliding glass doors to allow the marine air inside. Guests have palm tree and ocean views from each of the stylish guest rooms, 22 of the spacious rooms offer private balconies. There are four walk-up guest rooms with car parking right outside the entrance door.
A standout in design is the Mid-Century and Art Deco inspired black metal Parasoleil balcony railings. “They were more expensive than glass balcony railings,” said Kenny, “but worth the price due to the aesthetically pleasing look that filters light into the rooms.”
At the Grand Opening party in early May, guests were greeted with trays of Bees Knees cocktails up on the rooftop Birdseye Lounge and Bar. This popular social spot offers panoramic ocean and sunset views on the inviting rooftop terrace.
It’s also a culinary destination in La Jolla led by chef Luciano Scagliarini, a Le Cordon Bleu graduate. He previously worked at Edgewater Grill and Harbor House in San Diego’s Seaport Village, as well as the Executive Chef of the Coronado Cays Yacht Club. Chef Luciano prepares modern California coastal cuisine with an Argentinian and Baja California spin in flavors.
Some of his specialty menu items include Argentinian beef and corn empanadas served with chimichurri sauce (it’s the chef’s family recipe), Argentinian wild shrimp ceviche with chips, salads, burgers and tempura-battered shrimp tacos.
Enjoy with one of the bar’s signature Cormorant Teal cocktails made with coconut cream, pandan, rum and tropical fruit juices.
Touring multiple guest rooms, Kenny’s adds new energy with soothing sand, sea and sky colors. Rooms have custom built-in furniture, luxury mattresses and soft high thread count sheets. Marine inspired abstracted barnacle carpeting and cormorant art pay homage to the sea birds and their marine home. Kelly adds a pop of coral red color in each room with a stylish chair, couch or piece of art.
Additional guest conveniences include luxury bath amenities, large shower and plush bathrobes. There is a Nespresso machine, desk, mini refrigerator, safe, keyless entry and valet parking.
Right next to the hotel lobby, is the new Prospect Market, a small marketplace for locals and guests to purchase a bottle of wine or pick up snacks, grab-and-go lunches for a picnic overlooking the famous La Jolla bluffs and coves.
Just outside the ground floor lobby is the charming village of La Jolla offering a wide variety of restaurants, galleries and eclectic shops. The location is also just steps away to get a close view of La Jolla’s seals and sea lions.
Spring to Memorial Weekend is marine bird nesting season. The black cormorant with a blue chin nest on the bluff near the cove overlooking the ocean. The hotel was named after these majestic birds as a homage to their presence in La Jolla.
Oceanic Enterprises has over five other hotels, restaurants, and bars in the San Diego area.
