What to Consider Before Buying Jewellery

Jewellery is always a special way to show a loved one what they mean to you.  No matter what time of year, there is always something trending in the jewellery market to suit just about everyone’s taste.

Take the time to consider all of your options. Here are some tips to find that perfect piece of luxury jewellery.

Jewelry is an Ideal Milestone Gift

Milestones in life should be marked by a piece of luxury jewellery. It is a permanent way to keep the memories alive of a special moment. Engagement rings and wedding bands are one of those traditional milestone pieces that signify a couple’s unity. Jewellery given on birthdays, anniversaries or graduations are great, but think outside the traditional box and give gifts for those unexpected events. How about giving your loved one a piece… just because!

Enjoy the process

Don’t be rushed when buying jewellery. Take your time before you select your piece.  Look for a jeweller to advise and guide you through the process. If the piece doesn’t feel right, move on to the next. Check the return policy, just in case your significant other wants to exchange for something different.

What is your goal?

Do you want to start a collection with a certain designer? Are you looking at this as an investment piece? Or just something that will be worn every day?

When investing in a piece, it is important to consider more classic styles that can be passed down through the generations. If you’re going for trendy, then go all out! Gold is always a good choice for an investment and is a classic and timeless.

Where are you buying it from?

Are you visiting a high-end jewellery store or buying the gift online? When possible, a brick and mortar store ideal, you can touch and feel the product.

If you are buying  diamonds, find out whether the company you are buying from has GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certified diamonds or even find out if they are a member of the National Association of Jewellers.

Gemstones & Diamonds

Gemstones and diamonds are an investment, so do your research. Is the occasion a birthday? Birthstones are always a hit.

Diamonds take a little more research to ensure you’re getting quality that is coming from a reputable mine.  Look at the 4C’s – Clarity, Colour, Cut and Carat.

Selecting the Right Precious Metal

Gold? White Gold? Rose Gold? Silver? Platinum? There are so many options to choose from.

Gold (Yellow Gold) – An 18ct gold ring is particularly good quality gold, but has a more yellow tone, as opposed to a 9ct gold. A 9ct is a more diluted metal and has less gold content.

White Gold – This type of gold is rhodium plated to give the illusion of a platinum finish. It can make for an ideal everyday piece.

Platinum – This precious metal is an extremely resistant metal that stands the test of time..

Whatever type of jewellery you end up purchasing it will create memories that are sure to last a lifetime.
